Progut® is processed from whole brewery yeast
and because of that it contains both cell wall and yeast extract. Most other yeast products are by-products of the
yeast extract industry and contain only cell wall fractions. They contain mannoproteins and/or betaglucans but
relatively little or no yeast extract.The extract is separated and used in the feed additive industry and the rest is
sold as a feed ingredient.
At trials carried out at Danisco's Innovation Research Centre
in Finland and at Giessen University in Germany, it was shown that E.coli strains agglutinate to both cell wall
and yeast extract. The share of agglutination to these varies between strains. Therefore the combination of extract and
cell wall is much more effective in preventing E.coli than a product only containing cell wall. In vivo trials
carried out with piglets, layers and broilers increase the validity of this.
Process
Progut® is unique product, because it is
processed with a patented (EP 0946108) method. Some competitive yeast products contain more betaglucans and
mannoproteins in their products, but, unfortunately, the chemical composition of the yeast product does not tell much
about the real efficiency of the product. Process has key effect on efficiency of the product. Unprocessed brewery
yeast has very low bioactivity, but by special processing we are able to release much more soluble bioactive part out
of the yeast comparing other products and this ensure the efficiency of Progut® in practise.
