Research and Testing

A Farm trial carried out at Suntetorp farm in Sweden 2005

The trial included:

  • 108 calves in the control group
  • 70 calves in the test group

Method

Control group: 6 lires milm per calf per day and concentrate was fed ad lib

Test group: As above except Maikki Fiber was added to the milk:

  1. During the colostrum period, 10g was added per litre of milk
  2. After the colostrum period 20g of Maikki Fiber was added per litre until weaning
  3. The amount of progut was 1.5g/calf/day during the colostrum priod and then 3.0g/calf/day until weaning

The calves were weighed individually at birth and at 70 days of age. Diarrhoea and the duration of diarrhoea were registered individually and diarrhoea days were calculated. The age when each individual calf ate 1kg of concentrate per day was also registered.

Results

Calves in the test group had significantly higher 70 day weight (p=0.02) and daily gain (p=0.03) than calves in the control group. The addition of Maikki Fiber significantly (p=0.05) lowered the number of diarrhoea days per calf. It also seemed to decrease the variation in growth.
