Pekoni Break

Pekoni Break is a special feed intended for calming down and preventing the spreading of tail biting situations. The product has a very high sodium content and possesses a rich fibre feed combination which is beneficial for intestinal health. It should be offered as an additional feed ad lib on the floor. There are two main uses for Pekoni break; to prevent tail biting in fattening pigs and to prevent diarrhoea in sows.

Tail biting

There are a number of theories on the cause of tail biting. The most well know include:

  • Too large groups
  • Lack of bedding
  • Disturbances in feeding
  • Lack of protein and salt
  • Stress sensitive breeds

Mode of Action

  • Pekoni break is a fibrous feed (containing linseed and wheat bran) which seems to make the pig feel satisfied for longer. Linseed is a very palatable and tasty feed ingredient. It also contains beneficial fatty acids which are good for gut health.
  • Pekoni break has a high salt content which makes the animal thirsty. In turn, the animals drink more which means better metabolism and functioning of the gut.
  • The mineral content of Pekoni Break has favourable effects (i.e. laxative effects) on gut health. When the stomach works well, the animals feed better.
  • The product also contains ProgutTM. It's influence on animal production is well known and well-documented, as can be found on this site.

Testing and Results

Place Year Product Tested Results
Helsinki 2004 Pekoni Break (without ProgutTM) Fattening Pigs Pekoni Break decreased tail biting
21 Farm Surveys 2004-2005 Pekoni Break + Progut Fattening Pigs - Average farm size = 1000 pigs In 8/10 trials tail biting stopped completely or was dramatically reduced

The results of Pekoni Break’s farm survey are excellent (tests were carried out on 16700 pigs).

• 90 % of farms testing Pekoni Break are also willing to use it in the future.

• In almost 80% of the test pens, tail biting stopped totally or diminished considerably.

• The situation did not worsen in any of the tested pens.

Dosage rates

Fattening Pigs:

Should be offered as an additional feed ad lib to the floor of the pen. Apply according to appetite. A suitable starting dose is around 2-5 kg/pen/day. Dosing should continue until the situation calms down (generally this is between 3-5 days). In addition, all other tail biting prevention measures should be taken. These include: isloation, analysis of situations leading to stress and the medication of any pigs that have been bitten.

Sows:

Generally given from 3 days before farrowing and during lactation. The purpose of feeding Pekoni break is to prevent constipation before farrowing and to increase feed intake during lactation. The daily intake should be spread evenly over feeding times. For example 600g/sow/day = 300d/sow/feeding time.

3 days before farrowing the sow should be given 6 handfulls (1 handfull is about 100g)

2 days before 6 handfulls

1 day before 1 handfull

During lactation the sow should be fed two handfulls per day. The consumption over the whole period is about 8kg/sow.

Awards

Pekoni Break was awarded three stars at the Agromek exhibition which took place between 17 and 21 January 2006. Agromek is Europe’s largest agricultural trade show, which is held in Herning, Denmark every year. Due to the award Pekoni Break has attracted large international interest and publicity.

Agromek star awards 1-3 (three being the highest possible) are presented to certain products which are considered to be of the greatest importance for the individual farmer or for the farming sector in general. To gain three stars a product is required to have a new composition or effect that in a significant way improves ergonomics, comfort, enivironment or have economical effects. Pekoni Break was the only feed product to gain the prestigious three stars in 2006!
